What Grants Are Available?

Ballyfermot/Chapelizod Partnership Scholarship Scheme

(Academic year 2011/2012)


The aim of the scheme is to enable residents of Dublin 10 and Chapelizod  to participate in FETAC/HETAC

accredited courses from level 5 through to level 8. All courses must lead to a full

FETAC/HETAC award. University access programmes and Return to learning courses will also

be considered.

Government Grants

  • Higher Education Grant:

It is mainly students in University who apply for this grant and those who are entering a Level 8 course (honours degree) in an I.T. Apply to local authority i.e. Dublin City Council

  • VEC Grant:

This is generally for whether you are doing a PLC Course FETAC Level 5/6/7 or a non degree course in an I.T.

  • While there are different government grants they are all means tested in the same way and for the same amounts.

Means Test
At present if your family income is below €39,760 per year you will receive a grant of €1,370 if you live more than 24 km from college this rise's to €3,420.
If your family income is above €39,760 but below €49,690 you will receive a part- grant.
If you or your parent receives a social welfare allowance and the total income is less than €20,147 you are eligible for the top up grant. You will receive a grant of €2,680. If you live more than 24 km from the college this rises to €6,690.

These income limits rise depending on the number of dependent children etc in the family. Level 6 reckonable income band must include one of a range of social welfare payments as at 31 December 2007

Fees
If you are in an I.T or University and are receiving a government grant your registration/student services charge will be covered for you.
Residence

If you are under 23 even if you are not living at home you will be assessed on your parents/guardians income.

 

 

  • If you are over 23 and living away from the family home you will be assessed on your own income.

VTOS

  • For those who are returning to education and have been on certain Social Welfare payments you may be able to apply for VTOS.
  • VTOS is available in VEC Colleges. You can keep your social welfare payment and also will receive an allowance each week. Contact your college for details.

BTEA

Back to Education Allowance also allows you to keep your social welfare payment but you receive a once-off payment of €400 rather than a weekly allowance.

NOTE

All those receiving BTEA or VTOS payments are not eligible to receive the grant from the VEC or the CITY COUNCIL. They can still apply for the scholarship scheme from the partnership.

 

Disability Grant

There is also a grant available for students with disabilities. Applicants need to contact the Disability/Guidance Officer in your College for further information.
