It is very easy to get confused about the different types of documents that are often requested when applying for grants / funds. Below is an explanation of some of the most common documents that are requested.

  • Original Birth Certificate
The long format of the birth cert is most commonly requested. If you don't have this form it is available from Joyce House, 8 Lombard Street East, Dublin 2.

PPS No - Personal Public Service Number

Formerly called RSI Number. This is your unique reference number for all your dealings with the Public Service e.g applying to the Tax Office for tax credit certificates etc. If you do not have a PPS number contact your local Social, Community and Family Affairs Office.

Social Welfare Statement

It may be necessary to get a Social Welfare Statement if you or your parents are in receipt of benefit during some part of the relevant assessment period. Contact your local Social, Community and Family Affairs Office.

P45

When a person leaves their job their employer must give them a P45. This shows total pay, tax and PRSI deductions from the start of the tax year until the date they left employment. It is only necessary to have a P45 if employment has been terminated at any time during the relevant assessment period.

P60

An employer sends out a P60 to every employee at the end of each year. It shows total pay, tax and PRSI deducted. If you have lost your P60 you need to contact your employer to get a replacement.

P21

A P21 is a statement of total income, tax and tax paid for a particular tax year. This document is often requested by the grant authorities as proof of earnings for the purpose of obtaining a grant. A P21 can be obtained from the Tax Office.

Separated & Divorced Couples

It is only necessary to supply income details of the parent that you live with. However you should complete personal details for both parents e.g. name & address if requested on the form.

Mature Student

A mature student is anyone who is over 23 or above on the 1st of January of the year of entry or re-entry to an approved course. A mature student living independently of their parents outside the family home will be assessed on their own financial situation and not that of their parents. A mature student who is still residing in the family home will be assessed on their own income and that of their parents and guardians.
